Angels and Airwaves Rocks!

I heard a song by Angels and Airwaves on the radio that I really liked so I downloaded their album We Don't Need to Whisper from iTunes.  I have to say that this album rocks titties...what else should you expect from Tom DeLonge from Blink 182 fame.  There is not a single bad song on the whole album.....seriously.  If you like Blink songs, you'll like this album, give it a whirl.

Does anyone know of any upcoming shows?

Microsoft wastes paper due to bad UI

I had a previous post after I signed up for Live Office and I received some paperwork from Miicrosoft. It was a propeganda that welcomed me and explained their service offerings.
Why did they waste the time to put this together and the money and resources it took to send it out? Why couldn't they post this information in a blog entry? They needed this because the UI is so complicated like I said before. Features are hard to discover and use. Simplify the UI, make features more discoverable, and don't waste resources on non-product items and u will save money and get things out of the door faster.
P.S. I used Typepad mobile to post this. Very sweet!

Application for importing blog entries from .Text to Typepad

I promised to post the code that I wrote to import/export blog entries.  The attached .NET code has several interfaces that define a generic blog importer/exporter.  It also has two concrete classes that define a .Text exporter and a Typepad importer.  It has a console application that calls the importer/exporter framework to execute the process.

There is a lot of ways to improve this such as some good output and transfering of images (you still have to do that manually) but it is a start.  Since I didnt have that many entries, I didn't put that much time into it (probably took me about 5 hours total).

The .Text exporter retrieves the entries from the SQL Server database and the Typepad importer creates a file that can be used to import the entries from the control panel.  The format that is required for importing to Typepad can be found at http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/docs/mtimport.

Let me know if anyone downloads it and tries it.  If you have any issues or questions, you can email me at jwright [at] innovativstudios [dotcom].  Oh yeah, I'm not responsible for any loss of data, etc., etc.

What did I use my tablet for today? - PDF Markup

Annotator
Over the last couple of days, I have been marking up a PDF document for a client that I am currently working with.  How did I do this?  By using PDF Annotator.  It is a program that allows you to use your pen and save the changes back to the PDF document or to a new version of a document.  You can use a pen, highlighter, and even add pages to the PDF document.  One of the most invaluble tools for a tablet pc.

Ladies and Gents, please update your feed

I am closer to moving this blog to Typepad.  I have wrote something to move my existing entries from .Text to Typepad (I will post the code once the move is complete) and I am almost ready to move over.  I have had a Feedburner feed for a while and that is my preferred way for all 2 of my subscribers to subscribe to my content.  Please change your feed aggregators to http://feeds.feedburner.com/wrightin_gs if you are not subscribed to that already.  You will get the new content and the change will be seemless to you.  I will keep posting here (which the feedburner also gets) until I am ready to completely switch and I will post one last warning here before I move over.  Then this domain will point to my Typepad account.

Zune : Don't Believe the Hype

I'm sick of hearing all of these Zune things coming out right now.  I must admit that I was excited at first to hear that Microsoft is coming out with their own player.  The biggest of course was the WiFi integration but since hearing details about the WiFi, I am (once again) disappointed in Microsoft.  I was thinking about how many times I was away from my computer and I wanted some new content on my iPod.  How cool would that be to be able to go to iTunes at work or whever where you can't dock your iPod and download a new CD that came out that day or a TV show that you missed the night before or a new podcast that was just released?

Everywhere there are reports that the Zune WiFi is only going to be used to just trade songs with someone else.  What are the chances that a.) you bump into someone with another Zune player, b.) you have WiFi access, c.) they (or you) say that you are excited about a new song or video, and d.) you actually transfer the song and it works.  Thats dumb and is not enough of a reason to kill battery life for WiFi.  Who comes up with these stupid requirements?  Someone can pay me and I will tell them whether or not an idea will work and I don't even have a marketing degree.  Prediction: this player won't make a dent in the iPod market.

Signed Up to Get Real

I just paid and signed up for 37 Signals Getting Real Workshop.  I have already bought the book, read it twice, and I think it has very, very good advice.  In fact, I have changed the direction of the product I am working on to follow more of the Getting Real philosophy.  The workshop is said to be much like the book but with a lot more detail.  It is going to be held in Chicago, IL on Monday, October 9th.  It should be a very good learning experience.  I will of course blog my reactions and feedback.
